Trivia Night

A Virtual Trivia Night That Runs Itself

Hosting trivia night usually means one person does all the work: writing questions, keeping score, reading answers out loud, and adjudicating arguments. Twentyroll turns that job into three clicks. Create a room, pick your categories and pace, and share the code.

The questions come from a maintained library across dozens of categories, scoring is automatic and server-checked, and every player answers on their own device. You get to actually play in your own trivia night.

You set the rules of the night

The lobby gives the host real controls, so the same room works for a quick coffee-break quiz or a full evening event.

Your category mix

Pick up to 8 categories, from science and history to movies and sports, or leave it on surprise mix and let the room take everything.

Your length and pace

Choose 5 to 20 questions and a per-question timer from a quick 10 seconds up to 30, or turn the timer off entirely for a relaxed round.

Auto or host-paced

Let reveals advance automatically, or keep a host-clicks-next mode so you can read answers aloud and milk the suspense on a call.

Show who picked what

An optional reveal shows everyone’s answers after each question, which is where the friendly heckling comes from.

Nobody needs an app, an account, or the same device

Players join by opening your link or typing the 6-character code, entering a name, and that is it. Guests do not need accounts, and iPhones, Androids, laptops, and tablets all mix freely in one room of up to 12 players. That makes it work for remote teams, long-distance friend groups, and family calls where someone will absolutely be joining from an ancient iPad.

Questions are picked fresh for your specific group, and the selection avoids questions any player in the room has seen recently, so a regular player cannot quietly farm repeats in front of their friends.

Scoring that settles arguments

Everyone answers the same question at the same time on their own screen. Correct answers score points, faster correct answers score more, and streaks add a bonus, so the scoreboard rewards both knowledge and nerve. All scoring happens on the server: answers are never sent to anyone’s browser ahead of time, which means nobody can inspect the page or screenshot their way to a win.

After each question, the reveal shows the correct answer with a short explanation, so even the questions you lose teach you something to bring to the rematch.

And when trivia night needs a palate cleanser

Every room also includes three party mini games: Word Mix (a word scramble race), Imposter (a social deduction word game), and Odd One Out (spot the item that does not belong). The host can switch games between matches without anyone rejoining, which is exactly what a game night needs around round three.

Frequently asked questions

How do I host a trivia night online for free?

Create a free Twentyroll account, open Group Rooms, and create a room. Pick your categories, question count, and timer, then share the room code or link. Up to 12 players join from any browser and the game scores itself.

Do I have to write my own questions?

No. Questions come from a maintained library across dozens of categories, each with a correct answer and a short explanation. You choose the category mix; the room does the rest.

Do players need to download anything?

No. Everything runs in the browser on phones, tablets, and computers. Players without an account join as guests with just a display name.

How many people can join a trivia night?

Up to 12 players per room, from a minimum of 2. For bigger gatherings, you can run two rooms side by side and compare winners.

Can I control the pace of the quiz?

Yes. Set a per-question timer of 10 to 30 seconds or no timer at all, and choose whether reveals advance automatically or wait for the host to click next. Host-paced mode works well when you are also on a video call together.

Does a room trivia game affect my leaderboard rank?

No. Room games are casual and separate from ranked play, so guests and competitive players can share a scoreboard freely. Solo games and friend challenges are where XP and global rankings happen.
